Benefits for kids using technology
As a millennial parent, I grew up as the technological era was being born. My dad saw this happening and gave me every opportunity to engage and be engulfed in what he knew was going to be a world filled with all things tech.
I cannot thank him enough for these opportunities, I was years ahead of my peers when it came to learning to type, to read and my confidence level with engaging with anything new was through the roof.
I saw and lived the benefits of being exposed to various types of tech early on and I intend to do the same with my children. I’ve moved on to study computer science in education, which has given me more first-hand experience with how using devices, games and the internet can benefit children immensely.
What are the benefits for kids?
Here are my top 5 reasons:
- Interactive Learning: Devices offer interactive learning opportunities through educational apps and games. Kids can engage with the content and learn in a fun and engaging way which has the potential to build their problem solving and critical thinking skills which are both essential for all aspects of their lives. With technology, kids can learn at their own pace and in a way that suits their learning style.
- Convenient Access to Information: Tablets provide quick and easy access to information, which can be helpful for school projects, homework, and research. There are millions of resources available to kids to enhance all their subject matter and bring their school work to life and explore the world around them.
- Enhancing Creativity: Kids can explore their creativity through various creative apps, such as drawing, painting, and music apps available on smart devices. They can also use the camera to take photos and make videos, which can enhance their storytelling skills.
- Improving Fine Motor Skills: Using devices like tablets can improve kids’ fine motor skills, such as finger dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and precision.
- Digital Literacy: Learning how to use technology at an early age will help children develop digital literacy skills, which is essential to navigate the online world understand online safety, and using technology to communicate effectively. These skills are essential in the modern world and can prepare kids for future success.
Overall, giving your child access to tech can provide numerous benefits but it is your responsibility to ensure that it gets used in a responsible and balanced way. We should set clear rules and guidelines for usage and use the apps available such as family link to monitor your child’s online activities to ensure their safety and well-being.
