Captain Fanplastic – Audio book launch
On the 18th of September, which is also International Coastal Clean-Up Day, the family and I attended the Audio book launch of Captain Fanplastic – The Legend of Captain Fantastic an initiative run by Soapbox SA and driven by Ruben Hazelzet.
The launch took place at The Avenue in the Two Oceans Aquarium. This was the perfect surroundings for the kids to hear this beautiful story about the effects plastic has on the environment and why its important for us to recycle and keep out environment clean of plastic waste. The book cleverly illustrates how harmful plastic waste is to our precious marine life but also how plastic could turn into treasure, if recycled correctly. Instilling a #notrashbutnotreasure mindset.
The audio book was brought to life by the incredible Zolani Mahola and Alessandro Gigli. This was a star studded performance. The kids were captivated by every word Zolani fed to them. The songs were magical.
The story of “The legend of Captain Fanplastic” takes the reader on a journey with Captain Fanplastic and his trusty turtle friend Fin. Fin starts getting sick and this leads them to finding out why. The book is available on takealot from R190.
We also heard from the aquarium foundation and the work they do to protect our oceans and the animals they rehabilitate as well as the Black Mermaid and all she does through her foundation.
Captain Fanplastic is an environmental literacy programme that uses graphic storytelling, creativity and gamification to educate primary school kids about the impact of land-based pollution and the value of plastic should it be recycled. Through this Captain Fanplastic wishes to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals
The event was kindly sponsored by V&A Waterfront, Nestle and Floating Dutchman rum which we enjoyed on arrival.
